Start planning your website
Your website’s navbar is made up of the pages you create in your Content Management System (CMS). Top level pages will form the navbar, and the child and sub pages will form the internal web pages.
Plan your navbar and menu structure
Before you start adding content to your website, we recommend you take the time to plan your site map. Think about what pages you’d like to create and where they will be located on your site.
The current best practice recommendations are that users should be able to get to the page they’re looking for with no more than three clicks, and website menus should have no more than three levels.
Some other things to consider when creating your site map:
Ideally, your top level navbar should have no more than 5 or 6 items.
The site map should be designed for your audience - who are they, what are they looking for, and can they easily find what they’re looking for?
Planning your content
Once you have finalised your site map, you can start creating the website pages required.
Writing engaging content for a website is very different to writing for business reports. Users tend to skim web pages, so your should be easy to scan with headings, bullet points, and short paragraphs to help users find information quickly and keep them interested.
