How to check your DNS

What are DNS settings and where can they be found?

DNS settings are like the address book for your website, helping people find your association online. You can find the settings in the account dashboard of your domain name provider (e.g. GoDaddy or Crazy Domains).

Once you or your IT provider has added the required DNS records, you will need to confirm they have been configured correctly. DNS propagation can take anywhere between a few minutes and several hours depending on your DNS host, so it is normal for records not to appear immediately after saving.

How does Membes use DNS records?

Membes uses DNS validation for your site’s SSL certificate, and to point your domain to your Membes website and AMS.

You will receive an email from the Membes team with DNS instructions as part of your implementation.

How to check your DNS

There are a number of free tools available to check the DNS records for your domain. One example of such a tool is MX Toolbox and you can access it via https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx.

  1. Go to https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx

  2. In the Lookup field enter the DNS record you wish to search:

    1. SSL Certificate - Copy the Record Name provided in your DNS instruction email and paste it into the Lookup field

    2. Setup subdomain - Enter your setup subdomain, for example setup.yourassociation.com

    3. Live domain - Enter your www subdomain, for example www.yourassociation.com

  3. Click the dropdown arrow on the MX Lookup button and select CNAME Lookup.

  4. Click the CNAME Lookup button to complete the lookup.

  5. If your DNS has been configured correctly, you will see something similar to the following screenshots in the Canonical Name field

    1. SSL certificate - You will see the Record Value provided in your DNS instruction email.

    2. Setup subdomain or Live Subdomain - You will see the CNAME record provided in your DNS instruction email.

How will I know if the DNS hasn’t been configured correctly?

If your DNS records have not been configured correctly, you will usually see a message saying “DNS Record not found” or similar.

Below is an example screenshot of what you will on MX Lookup if the DNS records aren’t correct.

You will need to get in touch with your domain registrar or IT support to get your DNS records configured correctly.
